The first Warwickshire Young Ringers Event was held on Saturday 20th March at The Harry Windsor Ringing Centre at St Peter’s church Kineton.  Graham Nabb assembled no less than 16 young ringers from across the county, from Stratford to Cubbington,  to meet up for the first time, ring together and learn some new skills. An impressive number of adult helpers from local towers were also persuaded to help out in the ringing chamber (under the control of Nick Gunn) , demonstrating rope splicing  (ably presented  by Robert Reeves – rope jewellery a speciality) and getting the children to try handbell ringing.

The morning was structured into two sessions divided by a refreshment break and the children were organised into  groups so that eight at a time could try out the newly-augmented 8 tower bells linked to a simulator, while the other group worked in the church on their rope-skills and handbells.

During their break, they split up into smaller groups to compete for prizes in a ringing-themed quiz (devised by Jo Langford) whilst simultaneously consuming vast quantities of chocolate brownies, cakes and flapjacks. The event ended at 12.45 with a prize-giving for the best splice, a presentation of prizes, goodie-bags and the exchange of emails between firm friends.

Anna, one of the young ringers reports “The first thing I did was rope splicing – even though mine didn’t go to plan I really enjoyed it! The first time I rang the tower bells it was really weird because I was expecting the sound to come out of the top but actually it came out of a speaker. I learned lots of new things and made some great friends.”

Another ringer, Max, says “I must admit I wasn’t sure whether I’d meet anyone I could become friends with, but ended up teaming up with someone my age – and we worked so well together that our group, The Killer Donuts, got the top marks in the quiz! I think we might have won top prize in the eating contest too…. The simulator was just like Guitar Hero for bells and the bells were really easy to handle – it was awesome fun and I’ll definitely do it again!”

Graham hopes this will be the start of regular events to benefit Young Ringers in the area.
